Middlesbrough 8 Manchester City 1 - Injury time
Gareth Southgate named an unchanged side from that which beat Portsmouth and ensure Premier League survival.
For what was possibly his last game in charge of Manchester City, Sven Goran Eriksson made three changes from the side which lost at Liverpool. Joe Hart, Michael Johnson and Elano were replaced by Andreas Isaksson, Javier Garrido and Gelson Fernandes.
"Sven Goran Eriksson," sang the City fans as their manager emerged shortly before kick-off as Boro fans offered warm applause for their favourites as the teams were read out.
There was a keen start to the game with George Boateng crunching into one challenge and Tuncay looking typically busy.
But it was City who carved out the first chance as Darius Vassell set up Benjani on the right-hand edge of the Boro penalty area.
Following lengthy treatment to Benjani after he clashed with Fabio Rochemback City lost their way as Boro stepped up their game and Julio Arca was inches away with a curling effort when just up from the D.
Boateng again was instrumental as two corners were won in quick succession, one from a fierce shot of his.
Benjani was forced to leave the pitch with 12 minutes played, clearly not able to shake off what looked to be a rib injury.
It got worse for City just three minutes later as captain Richard Dunne made contact with Tuncay inside the penalty area as they chased a long ball from Chris Riggott. Tuncay went down, Dunne was sent-off and Stewart Downing clinically despatched the penalty with a low left-footed spot kick.
City steadied and tried to hit back and Stephen Ireland missed the ball completely when attempting to make contact with a neat pass from Martin Petrov, while Vassell went well wide with an overhead effort.
Boro were playing the better football and fine work from Rochemback set up Tuncay, but he delayed his shot and all Boro won was a corner.
It was better on 36 minutes.
Rochemback, looking impressive, displayed good footwork and set up Afonso Alves who drilled left-footed and low beyond Isaksson from 13 yards.
A quick break took Boro from the edge of their own box to inside City's, but a low drive from Alves was deflected into the arms of Isaksson as he dived away to his right.
Equally as impressive as Rochemback, Boateng set up Tuncay with a chance, but, with Downing arriving unmarked the Turk last control.
Entering first half injury time Tuncay set up Boateng who looked certain to score with a low drive, but Isaksson spread himself well to deflect the ball over the bar - it was a save which brought a ruffle of his hair from the man who forced him into action.
Half-time: Middlesbrough 2 Manchester City 0
After a tentative start to the second half Boro burst into life and Downing was inches away from winning a second penalty as he was impeded by Sun Jihai. Rochemback bringing a fine save from Isaksson from the resultant free-kick.
City swept forward and Mark Schwarzer did well to shadow Nery Castillo away from danger, though the City substitute did manage to pick out Vassell with a cross which the former Villa man sent wide with a diving header.
Fine work from David Wheater deep inside the penalty area brought a scrambled save from Isaksson who did well to gather a follow-up effort.
Boro then put the game to bed with two goals in three minutes.
The first came after 58 minutes as a Boateng cross was headed away but only to Stewart Downing who steadied himself before spectacularly volleying left-footed across Isaksson from an angled 14 yards.
Two minutes later a long ball over the top saw Afonso Alves set off in chase, he took control and entered the penalty area and shot for goal. Isaksson got a hand to it and Fernandes turned it over the line.
Southgate then elected to make a double change. There was huge applause for Arca as he made way, the reception was ever greater for Tuncay when he exited.
One of the changes took just eight minutes to make an impact as Adam Johnson ran straight at the heart of the defence and his low shot took a deflection off Michael Ball to strand Isaksson.
